What is Reiki ?
Reiki is neither a religion nor a belief system. It is a form of energy healing. It does not take the place of conventional medical treatment but it can be used in parallel with and, in fact, enhance conventional treatments by accelerating the healing process. It also works on animals and plants.
It is a very positive energy and can aid personal and spiritual growth. It is not only used for treating patients who are ill, but can be used to maintain health, for stress relief, for relaxation and for boosting the immune system. It acts on four different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
The name Reiki originates from Japanese: 'energy of the spirit' or 'universal life energy'.
Reiki works by channelling this positive energy through the patient and clearing any blockages in their energy system; again on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.
A Reiki practitioner must be initiated, or attuned, by a Reiki Master. The practitioner is not healing a patient, but channelling the healing Reiki energy through his/her hands.
A Reiki treatment is not a massage, but there are twelve basic hand positions from the crown of the head to the feet. The practitioner's hands are placed on the patient's body at each of these positions for a certain time (roughly five minutes, but this can vary depending on the intuitive feelings of the practitioner). The treatment usually lasts about an hour.
